Achieving Aims and Objectives
Supporting the preservation of historical materials
The ANMHP supports the preservation of historical materials by:
- working to raise awareness of the need to conserve historical materials. This is of great importance in the current climate of health care facility closures and mergers, as only recorded material will have any chance of survival into the future. The ANMHP supports the preservation of historical materials through its register of documents and artefacts.
The ANMHP does not acquire historical items, but is aware that people may wish to donate archival material to repositories for safekeeping. The ANMHP develops mechanisms to enable materials to be passed on to archives, museums and other appropriate authorities.
The ANMHP recommends: following the model established by the Australian Science Archives Project (ASAP) to further the conservation of, and access to, historical resources.
The ASAP does not acquire material for conservation or preservation. Instead, the ASAP:
- offer assistance in the identification of valuable materials and documents
- registers materials that are held in private and public collections, and
- provides information on these resources through its databases and the world wide web resource Bright Sparcs. http://www.asap.unimelb.edu.au/bsparcs/bsparcshome.htm
